Erica Terpstra

Erica Terpstra ( born May 26, 1943 in The Hague ) is a former Dutch swimmer, Secretary and Member of Parliament. From late 2003 to May 2010 she was chairperson of the Dutch Sports Federation NOC * NSF.

Life

Terpstra was at the beginning of the 1960s one of the most successful swimmers of the Netherlands. Your strongest line were the 100 m freestyle. Terpstra participated twice in the Olympic Games, in Rome in 1960 and 1964 in Tokyo. In Tokyo, she won the Dutch 4 × 100 m medley relay silver medal behind the USA, with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay, she won the bronze medal. In 1962, she had already become in Leipzig with the freestyle relay European champion. There are also several national championship titles.

After her time as an active athlete Terpstra started to work as a teacher and was in the Netherlands resident Chinese Dutch lessons. Later she worked as a sports journalist.

Terpstra was elected in 1977 for the liberal VVD by an overhang mandate in the Dutch Parliament. With a gap of four years between 1994 and 1998, when she summoned the Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok as State Secretary of Public Welfare, Health and Sports in his cabinet, she sat until 15 December 2003, the Second Chamber of Parliament. Upon their departure Terpstra was represented longest deputies. From election to election, she was elected with a large number of preferential votes in the 1994 election with about 311,000.

On 21 October 2003 Terpstra was elected chairperson of the Dutch umbrella organization for sports NOC * NSF. In the vote they won against the proposed government competitor Ruud Vreeman. Terpstra resigned in may 2010 this function. André Bolhuis was her successor.
