Ericeira is a comune ( freguesia ) in the central Portuguese district of Mafra. The place is a small town ( Vila ), located about 50 km northwest of Lisbon, and is particularly known for its surf spots.

History

Its origins go back to the settlement by trading driving the Phoenicians. The city rights (administrative rights " foral " ) was the place for the first time in 1229 by King Manuel I in the context of its administrative reforms in 1513 confirmed. In 1855 the previously independent circuit ( " Conselho " ) of Ericeira was dissolved and annexed to the county of Mafra.
