Erich Bethe

Erich ( Julius Adolf) Bethe ( born 2 May 1863 in Stettin, † October 19, 1940 in Leipzig ) was a German classical scholar.

Life

Bethe studied classical philology, history and archeology in Greifswald and Göttingen, where he received his doctorate in 1887 with Ulrich von Wilamowitz - Moellendorff. Then he continued the studies continued in Bonn (with Georg Loeschcke ), where he habilitated in 1891. After three years as a lecturer in Bonn and extensive travels in the Mediterranean in 1893 he married the painter Margarete Bethe- Lion ( 1859-1932 ) and was an associate professor at the University of Rostock. 1897 Bethe joined as a full professor in Basel, 1903 after casting. In 1906 he was appointed professor at the University of Leipzig, where he taught until his retirement in 1931 and conducted research. In the academic year 1927/1928 he was rector of the university.

After the handover of power Bethe signed 11 November 1933, the commitment of the professors at German universities and colleges to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi state.
