Erich Clar

Erich Clar ( born August 23, 1902 in Herrnskretschen, Bohemia, † March 27, 1987 in Estepona, Spain ) was a chemist.

Biography

Clar was born in German Bohemia. He studied chemistry at the Technical University Dresden. There he received his doctorate in 1927 on polycyclic aromatics, his doctor father was Roland Scholl. From 1930 to 1933 he worked in a laboratory in Milan. During the Third Reich itself Clar behaved apolitical and was not a party member. From 1936 to 1946 he worked in his private laboratory in his home town. In 1929 he succeeded in Erstdarstellung of linear penta -nuclear aromatics pentacene, 1939 Erstdarstellung of linear hexanuclearen aromatics hexacene. Its intense Quote scientific work from the UK, in particular the Royal Cancer Hospital, London, especially during the bombings there 1940/1941 are understood by different page as a hidden criticism of National Socialism.

In 1946 he left Germany and settled in Glasgow. From 1953 to 1972 he was professor at the local university. He was the founder and designer of the modern polycyclic aromatic chemistry.

In 1965 he received the August Kekulé Medal of the Chemical Society of the GDR. Posthumously, he was awarded on 24 September 1987, the first " Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Research Award".
