Erich Hof

Erich Hof ( born August 3, 1936 in Brigittenau, Vienna, † January 25, 1995 in Vienna ) was an Austrian football player and later a football coach. He is regarded as one of the biggest idols of the Wiener Sport -Club, and was one of the most successful striker in the history of the Austrian national team. As a coach, he was given responsibility for the Austrian team for over two years.

Career

Erich Hof fell early game because of his wit, his technique of free kicks and overview when Brigittenauer SCR Hochstädtplatz on and remembered by his silence a little of Matthias Sindelar. From Hochstädtplatz he came to Dornbach to the sports club, where, after only six minutes already reached the age of 17 on his debut in the State League on March 6, 1954 was the first league goal in the championship game against the WAC. Together with Walter Horak, Adolf Knoll, Josef and Karl Hamerl Skerlan presented the tricky center forward soon the famous five - attack Dornbacher represent the club decides dominated Austrian football in the late 1950s. In the spring of 1982, he was dismissed as coach of Austria and Vaclav Halama became his successor. After the 1982 World Cup, he finally jumped in and as Austria's coach. After a good start - three games, three wins, 11-0 goals - he had, however, already in 1984 to resign after missed European Championship qualifiers again and make Branko Elsner in the dugout area. He also briefly worked as a trainer in Greece at Diagoras Rhodes ( 1987). Until his death Erich Hof worked as a consultant for sports club and Austria. On January 25, 1995 Erich Hof succumbed to his year long battle with cancer at the age of 58 years. At his house in the main street Hernalser 214 for some years a memorial plaque to the great footballer.
