Erich Hoffmann

Erich Hoffmann ( born April 25, 1868 in Witzmitz, Pomerania, † 8 May 1959 in Bonn, North Rhine -Westphalia ) was a German dermatologist. He invented the light image method in microscopy.

Life

Hoffmann discovered together with Fritz Schaudinn in 1905 at Berlin's Charité hospital the syphilis pathogen Spirochaeta pallida ( Treponema pallidum today ).

In 1908 Hoffmann professor at the University of Halle. From 1910 to 1934 he was at the University of Bonn, since 1918 as a professor. At these universities he lectured and held the highest positions.

Hoffmann declared himself willing Eva Glees to accept as a graduate student, after she had passed her state exam in November 1933 and set out in spite of the hostility for the subsequent promotion to the search for a doctor father - at first without success, because no professor would accept a Jewish doctoral student "He was very German national, but also very brave. " Because of his opposition to the Nazi regime Hoffmann in 1934 was dismissed from the civil service. After his retirement Hoffmann worked at the Foundation Georg -Speyer-Haus in Frankfurt am Main.

During the period of National Socialism Hoffmann lived outside of Germany, but returned to Bonn, where he set up a laboratory.
