Erich S. Gruen

Erich S. Gruen (* May 1935 in Vienna ) is an Austrian - American historian. He teaches since 1966 at the University of California, Berkeley as " Gladys Rehard Wood Professor of History and Classics ." In 1992 he was president of the American Philological Association.

Gruen's initial research focus was on the history of the Roman Republic. His most famous work, The Last Generation of the Roman Republic (Berkeley, 1974 ) is generally considered as an alternative to Ronald Syme's The Roman Revolution ( Oxford 1939). In later works he dealt with Hellenism and Judaism in the ancient world.
