Erich Schmid

Erich Schmid ( born January 1, 1907 in Balsthal, Canton Solothurn, † December 17, 2000 in Zurich ) was a Swiss conductor and composer.

Life

Schmid grew up as the son of the Protestant pastor of Balsthal and attended from 1922 to 1926 the teacher training college in Solothurn. There he was taught by Max Kaempfert. After a brief spell as a primary school teacher Schmid attended the Hoch Conservatory in 1927 in Frankfurt am studying with Bernhard Sekles, Malata Fritz and Hermann Schmeidel. From 1928 to 1932, he is a fellow of the Mozart Foundation (Frankfurt), first works are broadcast on the radio. Encouraged by this success, he decides 1931-1933 to visit the master class with Arnold Schoenberg in Berlin. After he returned for political and financial reasons, to Switzerland, he took over in 1934 in the wake of Jacob Gehring the position of music director in Glarus, where he taught until 1949. His compositions occurs from 1940 strongly in favor of conducting back, 1949, he can take over the management of the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich. He gave this office from 1956 to 1970 and then led the Radio Orchestra Beromunster. In addition, he had from 1963 to 1973 a lecturer at the Music Academy of Basel for the field of conducting. Numerous conducting engagements have taken him to England, Israel, Hungary, Germany, Denmark and other countries.
