Erich Schmidt (historian)

Erich Schmidt ( born June 20, 1853 in Jena, † April 29, 1913 in Berlin) was a German literary scholar.

Life

After studying under Wilhelm Scherer he was from 1875 lecturer of History of Literature and in 1877 associate professor of German philology in Strasbourg from 1880 then full professor in Vienna. In 1885 he became director of the Goethe archives in Weimar. In 1887, he was then a professor of German language and literature at the Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität in Berlin. In 1890 he was the keynote speaker at the dedication of Lessing monument in Berlin's Tiergarten. From 1909 to 1910 he was rector of the university. From 1906 until his death he was president of the Goethe Society in Weimar.

Erich Schmidt final resting place is a family grave in the cemetery IV of the community in Jerusalem and New Church at the Bergmann Strasse in Berlin -Kreuzberg, which is obtained as an honorary grave of Berlin.
