Erich Walter Sternberg

Erich Walter Sternberg ( born May 31, 1891 in Berlin, † December 15, 1974 in Tel Aviv) was an Israeli composer.

Sternberg first studied law in Kiel, then music at the Berlin Klindworth - Scharwenka Conservatory with Hugo Leichtentritt, Hermann Abert and H. Praetorius. In 1931 he emigrated to Palestine and became a teacher at the Conservatory of Tel Aviv. In 1936 he founded with Bronisław Huberman the Palestine Symphony Orchestra (later the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra ). From 1938 to 1953 he was president of the Israeli section of the ISCM.

He composed several orchestral works, two string quartets, works for chorus and orchestra, two operas and an oratorio.
