Erik de Bruin

Erik de Bruin ( born May 25, 1963 in Hardinxveld- Giessendam ) is a former Dutch discus thrower and shot putter.

He participated in the 1984 Olympics, where he finished eighth in the shot put and ninth in the discus throw. In Seoul, he was at the 1988 Olympics in turn Ninth with the discus. The greatest success of his career, he celebrated at the World Athletics Championships 1991 in Tokyo, when he won the silver medal in the discus throw behind Lars Riedel. Previously, he had also won silver with the discus at the European Championships in 1990.

De Bruin holds ( established on 1 April 1991 in Sneek ) with 68.12 m the Dutch record in the discus throw. At times, he stopped with a width of 20.95 m also the national record in the shot put ( set up on May 14, 1986 in Leiden). When ASV Sports Festival 1993 in Cologne, he tested positive for testosterone and HCG. In the Netherlands, he was acquitted, but later banned by the World IAAF for four years.

De Bruin is married to the Irish Olympic swimming champion Michelle Smith, whose coach he was.
