Erik Meijer (politician)

Erik Meijer ( born December 5, 1944 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch politician ( Socialist Party ).

Life

Erik Meijer completed his university studies in social geography from 1972 and worked from 1971 to 1975 as a geography teacher. From 1980 to 1992 he was employed as an administrative officer of the city of Rotterdam.

In addition to his professional and political party work, he was from 1990 to 1993 as a board member of the Foundation Civics, from 1995 to 1998 as chairman of the residents association clasps (Rotterdam ) and from 1995 to 1999 as chairman of the foundation " Ontwikkelbank Centrum " (Rotterdam) active.

Policy

Erik Meijer started his political career from 1961 to 1969 as a member of the Main Board of the socialist youth and student associations. He joined in 1968 the Pacifist Socialist Party and practiced there until 1991, among others, the Vice-Chair and the Chair of the Section Representatives from. He was also active as an editor of the party newspaper. From 1975 to 1978 he was a member of the city council of Amsterdam for his party. He served as a member of the district council Delfs Haven from 1998 to 2002 and as a member of the Provincial Council of South Holland 1982-1995 Other mandates.

At the beginning of the 1990s, he joined the party Groen Links. He was from 1992 to 1995 a member of the National Executive and Deputy Chairman of the party. Since 1999 he is a board member of the Socialist Party of the Netherlands.

He belongs since 1999 to the European Parliament and is one of two Dutch politicians in the Confederal Group of the European United Left. In Parliament he sits on the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Subcommittee on Human Rights and is a member of the Delegation for relations with the countries of Southeast Europe.
