Eritrean tallero

The Tallero (Italian for Taler ) was the currency of Italian Eritrea from 1890 until 1921.

The currency was divided into 5 lire to each 100 Centesimi. The lira was equivalent to the Italian lira.

The Italian colonial authorities in 1885 approved the issue of banknotes, which were denominated in lira, the first Tallero silver coins were issued until 1890. The Tallero was coined after the model of the Maria Theresa thaler, which was still widely used and accepted in East Africa at the end of the 19th century. The coin has a diameter of 40.5 mm and a weight of 28.125 grams roughness at a fineness of 800 ‰ silver. The last year of issue of the Tallero was 1918.

In 1921 the Tallero was abolished and the Italian lira circulated now alone until it was replaced in 1938 by the Italian East African lira.
