Erkki Tuomioja

Erkki Tuomioja ( born July 1, 1946 in Helsinki) is a Finnish politician of the Social Democratic Party ( SDP) and since June 22, 2011 Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland. He had held from 2000 until April 2007 this office.

Tuomioja studied political science and economics. He is associated with the left wing of the SDP; He is a member of Attac. His father, Sakari Severi Tuomioja, was also a politician.

From 1 July 2006 to 31 December 2006, he took over as secretary of state during the Finnish Presidency of the EU Council Presidency.

After the defeat of his party in the parliamentary elections on 18 March 2007 Tuomioja was replaced by the Foreign Ministry Ilkka Kanerva ( Conservative ). After the 2011 general election Tuomioja returned to that post.

Tuomioja is Associate Professor of Political History at the University of Helsinki and a widely read author, among others, the European project, the economic and monetary policies of the EU or Finland's foreign and security policy.
