Ermengarde of Hesbaye

Ermengarde (also Ermengard ) of Haspengauw (* 780, † October 3 818 in Angers, also buried there ) was 794 since the first wife of the future Emperor Louis the Pious.

Ermengarde was the daughter of Count Ingram, about whose life nothing is known. 794 she was betrothed to Ludwig, the fourth son of Emperor Charlemagne, whom she eventually married 798. Pope Hadrian I was anointed king of Aquitaine Ludwig 781. Since his three older brothers Pippin, Charlemagne and Pippin 810 and 811 died, Ermengarde was now the wife of the heir to the imperial crown. 814 died her father Charlemagne and Louis succeeds. 816 Ermengarde was crowned by Pope Stephen IV in Reims empress. She died two years later.

The marriage produced six children, including Emperor Lothair I, Pepin I, King of Aquitaine, and Ludwig II, King of the East Frankish Empire.
