Ermengol V, Count of Urgell

Ermengol V. of the Mollerussa (Catalan Ermengol el de Mollerussa, † September 11, 1102 ) was a Count of Urgell from the House of Barcelona. He was a son of the Count of Urgell Ermengol IV († 1092 ) and his first wife Lucia.

Ermengol V. succeeded his father in 1092, who died in Urgell. On September 11, 1102, he directed the village Mollerussa near Lleida an army of 300 men against an army of the Almoravids and was killed in battle. Based on the Latin name of the place of death ( Maioricæ ) as it names the Chronicle of San Juan de la Peña, among other things, he was often identified in ancient historiography with Mallorca. So felt compelled to correct the facts already in the 16th century Jéronimo Zurita.

Ermengol V. was married to the Castilian nobles María Pérez, the daughter of Count Pedro Ansúrez, which until 1109 had led the regency in Urgell. The children of the marriage were:

  • Ermengol VI. (* Around 1095, † June 28, 1154 ), Count of Urgell.
  • Estefanía ( founded in 1143, the Cistercian Abbey of Santa María de Valbuena ); ∞ with Fernando García de Castro, 2 ∞ with Rodrigo González de Lara.
