Ermengol VII, Count of Urgell

Ermengol VII of Valencia (Catalan Ermengol el de València, † August 11 1184 in Requena ) was a Count of Urgell from the House of Barcelona. He was a son of Count Ermengol VI. of Urgell († 1154 ) and the Arsenda de Cabrera ( Cabrera house ).

Like his father spent Ermengol VII most of his life in the Kingdom of León - Castile. From 1167 he continuously belonged to the retinue of King Ferdinand II of León, who had appointed him to his maiordomus. Furthermore, he had been awarded dominion over the Extremadura and Alcántara, on whose conquest he was involved. 1184 led Ermengol with his half brother Galcéron de Sales on a campaign in the Moorish taifa kingdom of Valencia. In Requena ( comarca of Plana d' Utiel ) they were defeated and killed. Ermengol was buried in the Abbey of Santa María de Bellpuig at Avellanas, which he founded in 1166 with his wife. His descendant Ermengol X had let make him a tomb, in 1928 purchased by John D. Rockefeller Jr. and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City had been bequeathed to where it is now on display at the branch The Cloisters.

He was married to Dolça of Foix († 1209), daughter of Count Roger III. of Foix. Their children were:

  • Ermengol VIII († October 16, 1209 ), Count of Urgell.
  • Marquesa; ∞ with Ponç III. de Cabrera, Viscount of Cabrera and Àger.
  • Miraglia; ∞ with Count Gómez González de Traba.
