Ernest Crofts

Ernest Crofts ( born September 15, 1847 in Leeds, Yorkshire, † March 19, 1911 in London) was an English painter. He is known for history and battle paintings.

Crofts was the son of John Croft's craft and his wife Ellen Wordsworth. Through his mother Crofts was related to the poet William Wordsworth.

Already during his school years, it was recognized Crofts artistic skills. Equipped with a small stipend, students Crofts was the history painter Alfred B. Clay in London. When he died in 1868 unexpectedly, Croft tried to become independent as an artist, but failed after a short time.

End of 1869 Crofts went to Germany and became a pupil of the painter Emil Hünten in Dusseldorf. He soon became acquainted with Elisabeth Wust Mayrhofen, whom he married in Dusseldorf in 1872. With her he had a daughter. From 1882 to 1889 Crofts was a member of the Artists' Union paintbox.

He had his artistic breakthrough in 1872 with scenes from the Franco-German war. One of his first pictures in this genre was "retreat of the French at Gravelotte ." This image was awarded on the occasion of an exhibition of the Royal Society in 1874. This success brought with it that Croft's works were now seen regularly at exhibitions of the Royal Society.

1878 took the Royal Society Crofts as " Associate " and he thanked him for the picture Wellington 's march to Waterloo. 1896 Crofts was appointed a member, and two years later they granted him the status of " Keepers".

At the age of about 63 years, the painter Ernest Crofts died on March 19, 1911 in London. His final resting place he found in the cemetery of Kensal Green. On 19 December of the same year was Croft's widow the entire artistic estate (including the studio ) by the auction house Christie's auction.
