Ernest Frederick, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld

Ernst Friedrich of Saxe- Coburg -Saalfeld ( born March 8, 1724 in Saalfeld, † August 26 1800 in Coburg ) was 1764-1800 Duke of Saxe- Coburg -Saalfeld.

Life

Ernst Friedrich was the eldest son of the Duke Franz Josias of Saxe- Coburg -Saalfeld (1697-1764) from his marriage with Anna Sophia (1700-1780), daughter of Prince Ludwig Friedrich I of Schwarzburg- Rudolstadt. Prince Heinrich of Schwarzburg- Sondershausen had appointed him in 1758 to his sole heir, but lost Ernst Friedrich the inheritance process.

Ernst Friedrich succeeded his father in 1764 as Duke of Saxe- Coburg -Saalfeld, who had left considerable debts and moved the residence permanently in Coburg. Because of the high debt of the country was in 1773 a debit Commission used by Emperor Joseph II for forced debt management, who worked for over thirty years. The Commission was initially later led by Prince Joseph Friedrich von Sachsen- Hildburghausen, of Duke Ernst II of Saxe -Gotha. Ernst Friedrich were 12,000 Taler allowed annual income. The Duke led 1768 the number lottery to support breeding and orphanage financially. He also promoted agriculture. When his chamberlain served the writer Moritz August von Thummel.

Progeny

Ernst Friedrich married on April 23, 1749 in Wolfenbüttel Sophie Antonia ( 1724-1802 ), daughter of Duke Ferdinand Albrecht II of Brunswick, with whom he had the following children:
