Ernest Leo Unterkoefler

Ernest Leo Unterköfler ( born August 17, 1917 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, † January 4, 1993 ) was Bishop of Charleston.

Life

Ernest Leo Unterköfler received on 18 May 1944, the sacrament of Holy Orders.

Pope John XXIII. appointed him on 11 December 1961 Titular Bishop of Latopolis and auxiliary bishop in Richmond. The Apostolic Delegate in the United States of America, Egidio Vagnozzi, donated to him on 22 February of the following year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Raleigh, Vincent Stanislaus Waters, and the Coadjutor Bishop of Wheeling, Joseph Howard Hodges.

On December 12, 1964 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Bishop of Charleston.

For his commitment to the rights of workers and the support of the labor movement among the poor inhabitants of the Appalachian Unterköfler in 1980 awarded the Pacem in Terris Award of the Diocese of Davenport.

On February 22, 1990, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation for health reasons.
