Ernest Moniz

Ernest Jeffrey Moniz ( born December 22, 1944 in Fall River, Massachusetts) is an American physicist and politician. Since May 21, 2013, shall exercise the Office of the Secretary of Energy of the United States. Previously, he was owner of the Cecil and Ida Green Chair in Physics and Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and headed the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment ( MIT Laboratory for Energy and the Environment).

Moniz studied physics at Boston College (Bachelor of Science, 1966) and in 1972 received his doctorate at Stanford University in theoretical physics. As a post - graduate student, he was 1971/72 at the CEA in Saclay and 1972/73 at the University of Pennsylvania. From 1973 he taught as assistant professor and from 1983 as a professor at MIT. From 1991 to 1995 and 1997 to 2001 he was head of the physics department and was from 1983 to 1991 Director of the Bates Linear Accelerator Center. From 1976 he was also a consultant at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he was a visiting scientist in 1976. It deals with nuclear physics and energy supply issues.

From 1995 to 1997, Moniz worked in the Executive Office of the U.S. President as head of science policy; 1997 to 2001 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Energy. On 4 March 2013, was appointed by President Barack Obama as the successor to Steven Chu for Secretary of Energy of the United States. After confirmation by the U.S. Senate without a dissenting vote, he could take up his post on 21 May 2013.

Moniz wears honorary doctorates from the Universities of Athens, Erlangen - Nuremberg and the Michigan State University. In 2013 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Moniz is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
