Ernest Thompson Seton
Ernest Thompson Seton ( born August 14, 1860 in South Shields, County Durham today in Tyne and Wear, Scotland, † October 23, 1946 in Seton Village, New Mexico) was a well known author and co-founder of the U.S. Scouting.
During his life, Seton used variations of his name as a pseudonym and as an everyday name. That was not uncommon in the United States this decade. Among them were Ernest Evan Thompson and Ernest Seton Thompson.
Life
Seton was one of the first writers of nature stories in which animals usually played the lead roles. The best known of his works are Wild Animals I Have Known ( German title: Bingo and other animal stories ), published 1898 ( German last 1985), as well as Animal Heroes ( German title: animal heroes ), published in 1906, the Walt Disney Studios filmed in 1962 his. story of Lobo the Wolf ( the Legend of Lobo ), and his book the Biography of a Grizzly 1970 as King of the Grizzlies ( King of the Grizzlies ). The book Bannertail: The Story of Grey Squirrel ( German title: flags tail: story of a gray squirrel ) from 1922 has become the template for the Japanese anime series pompom, the squirrel (Japaneseシートン 動物 記 りす の バナー) in 1979.
Based on his experiences of nature and descriptions Seton developed a concept of education of youth, which he represented in the Birch Bark Roll of Woodcraft and from 1902 transposed in the Woodcraft pedagogy. He combined in nature and natural history experience with community and health education in the form of tent camps and Indian elements. His educational experience and umweltbildnerisch be termed concept has been applied internationally in various groupings of the Woodcraft movement.
1906 Seton met with Robert Baden- Powell, later founder of the Scout Movement, together. Baden -Powell had the Birch Bark Roll read with great interest. Together they continued to develop their ideas for youth work.
Baden -Powell founded in 1907 in the UK, the Scout Movement. Seton in 1910 had large share in founding the American branch of this movement, the Boy Scouts of America. In this organization, Seton's Woodcraft Indians merged with the YMCA groups working on the Scout method, in addition to several other youth organizations.
