Ernest van der Eyken

Ernest van der Eyken ( born July 23, 1913 in Antwerp; † 6 February 2010) was a Belgian composer, conductor and violist.

At age five he received his first musical instruction at the Music Academy in Sint- Truiden. At seven, he came into the class for music theory by Karel Candael at the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory in Antwerp. In 1930, he put his first diploma examination with Jan Broeckx off with success. In 1931, he also passed the final examination for viola with Napoleon thistle Mans. Further studies at the Conservatory in Antwerp were chamber music with Albert van de Vijver, orchestral conducting at Lodewijk de Vocht, harmony with Emiel Constant Verrees and Edward Verheyden. For counterpoint and fugue, he studied privately with August de Boeck and instrumentation with Paul Gilson. Further studies he undertook in conducting with Clemens Krauss and Joseph Marx in the International Conducting school in Salzburg.

In 1930 he debuted as a violist in the Great Symphony Orchestra of the World's Fair (1930 in Antwerp). He also played in the known major orchestras in Antwerp ( Orchestra of the Royal Flemish Opera, New Concerts, Orchestra of the Zookonzerte and various chamber ensembles ). From 1942 to 1944, appointed him as second conductor at the Royal Flemish Opera. In the period 1952-1976 he was a teacher of violin and chamber music at the Music Academy in Ekeren. He founded the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra in Antwerp and was also the conductor. In the 1960s he was in charge of the music editor for music programs in the Flemish- speaking television. Furthermore, the conducted the Youth and Music Orchestra of Antwerp from 1963 to 1976 and has appeared often as a guest conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Antwerp and the Orchestra of the BRT ( Radio and Television Society). In 1977 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, seal and Fine Arts of Belgium.
