Ernesto Maceda

Ernesto Maceda Madarang ( born March 26, 1935 in Pagsanjan, Laguna ) is a former Filipino politician.

Biography

Ally and opponent of Ferdinand Marcos

After school he studied law at the Ateneo de Manila University and graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ) cum laude.

His political career began in Maceda age of 23 in 1959 with the election with the best result as a member of the City Council of Manila. Because of its local services he was honored with the title of Outstanding Councilor of Manila.

In 1966 he was appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos to the Minister for Community Development ( Secretary of Community Development ), and thus became the youngest member of the Cabinet of the Government Marcos. As part of a cabinet reshuffle 1969, he was executive secretary and assumed so by the President and Vice President Fernando López is the third most important office in the government. At the same time he was also chairman of the commission for reorganization. In another reshuffle, he was appointed in 1970 by President Marcos appointed Minister of Trade and Industry and resulted in these programs and also founded to protect consumers trade relations with many countries of Eastern Europe.

Ascent to the Senate President

When Corazon Aquino after the escape of Ferdinand Marcos in February 1986 itself was President of the Philippines, Maceda was appointed by the Minister of Natural Resources.

In the elections in June 1987, he was again elected Senator and was this to June 1998. During this time he was initially between 1992 and 1993 President of the Senate pro tempore, and later from October 1996 to January 1998 President of the Senate. Between 1992 and 1993, Maceda was also chairman of the influential Committee on public accountability, the so-called Blue Ribbon Committee, which deals with the investigation of bribery and corruption in the government.

Most recently he was from January to June 1998 as Minority Leader ( Minority Leader ) spokesman for the opposition in the Senate.

After retiring from the Senate, he was appointed by President Joseph Estrada in 1999 as ambassador to the United States and held this post until 2001.

For his political achievements, he was awarded an honorary PhD in Public Administration from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and an honorary doctorate in Education from the Philippine Normal University.
