Ernesto Sabato

Ernesto Sabato (* June 24, 1911 in Rojas, † 30 April 2011) was an Argentine writer, scientist and painter.

Life

Ernesto Sabato was born in 1911 as the tenth of eleven children of an Italian immigrant couple, Francisco Sabato and Juana María Ferrari, in Rojas in the province of Buenos Aires. The father came from an old noble family of Arbëresh. In La Plata, he attended school and university ( Universidad Nacional de La Plata); his studies in physics and mathematics, he graduated in 1938 with a doctorate from. Before the Second World War, he lived a long time in Paris, where he underwent an existential crisis; in 1935 he returned to Argentina. At age 28 he was already Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Instituto de Física of the Universidad de la Plata and worked at the Laboratoire Curie in Paris and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on nuclear physics, until he finally gave up this facet of his work in 1945.

Sabato began working as a translator and was briefly employed by the UNESCO. He was also head of the commission to uncover the crimes of the military dictatorship in Argentina CONADEP and with the publication of the report Nunca más concerned, who documented the crimes committed by the Argentine military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983. In 1984 he received the Cervantespreis. In later years he worked primarily as a painter. At the age Sabato almost completely blind.

At the request of President Raúl Alfonsín was Sabato Chairman of CONADEP - commission to investigate the fate of the desaparecidos ( the disappeared ) of the 1970 military dictatorship.
