Ernesto Valverde Tejedor ( born February 9, 1964 in Viandar de la Vera, Cáceres Province ) is a Spanish football manager and former football player.

Playing career

His club career started at Deportivo Alavés. Further stations were Sestao River, Espanyol, FC Barcelona, ​​the return to the Basque country to Athletic Bilbao and finally retiring as an active player at RCD Mallorca in 1997.

His greatest achievement was winning the UEFA Cup in 1989 and the Copa del Rey in 1990. This was never granted to him as a player from the city rivals Espanyol, with whom he failed to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 1988 final of the UEFA Cup.

An application for the Spanish national team stands for Valverde to Beech, whom he had during his time at FC Barcelona.

Coaching career

As a coach, he initially trained some youth teams at his former club Athletic Bilbao, before he took over the Erstligateam 2003. In the season 2004/2005 he reached a sensational fifth place, which could not be repeated in the subsequent period without the trainer with the traditionally occupied only with Basque team.

After a year's break should follow the dedication at Espanyol Barcelona 2006. There, too, he had immediate success. He led his team to the UEFA Cup final, where he was defeated for the second time in his career with Espanyol.

From June 2008 to June 2009, he was coach of the Greek record champions Olympiakos Piraeus. The following season Valverde came over from Manuel Pellegrini at the Spanish first division side Villarreal; Pellegrini, in turn, became the new coach of the record champion Real Madrid. At Villarreal, he became after the 20th matchday of the 2009/10 season where one at home 0:2 Osasuna defeated and slipped to tenth place in the table, laid off.

He replaced Ewald Lienen as coach of Olympiakos Piraeus, following his departure with the team to qualify for the UEFA Europa League 2010/11. He returned after only one year back to Piraeus back.

On April 20, 2012 it was announced that Valverde, who was able to celebrate with the Olympiakos Piraeus the third Greek Championship and the second Cup victory, will leave the club after the 2011/12 season for personal reasons.

On December 3, 2012 Valverde joined the succession of two days earlier dismissed Mauricio Pellegrino at Valencia. At the end of the season 2012/13 Valencia missed the Champions League qualification, whereupon Valverde was dismissed because of a defeat on the final day.

For the 2013/14 season Valverde took over as coach of Basque traditional club Athletic Bilbao.
