Ernie Caceres

Ernesto " Ernie " Caceres ( born November 22, 1911 in Rockport, Texas, † January 10, 1971 in San Antonio, Texas) was an American jazz saxophonist ( baritone, but also tenor and alto saxophone) and clarinetist of the oldtime Jazz and Swing.

Caceres played from 1928 professionally in local bands in Texas, first as a guitarist and then with his brother Emilio Caceres, a violinist in the Mexican " Norteño " style, in Detroit and New York. His brother Pinero was a musician ( pianist, trumpeter ). In the summer of 1938, Caceres played with Bobby Hackett and 1939 tenor saxophone with Jack Teagarden. 1940 to 1942 he was in the Glenn Miller Band (second alto saxophone), with whom he also appeared in the films " Sun Valley Serenade " and " Orchestra Wives". After that he played with Johnny Long, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Woody Herman before he was drafted in 1945. After his release, he played in New York in " Nick's " in the band of trumpeter Billy Butterfield, and frequently continues into the 1950s with Eddie Condon, but mainly worked as a studio musician. In 1949 he led his own quartet in New York " Hickory Log ". In the 1950s, he also played regularly in Gary Moore Orchestra on television and with Bobby Hackett (as " Henry Hudson Hotel " 1956). In the early 1960s he played again with Billy Butterfield, often performed at jazz festivals and then moved in 1964 back to San Antonio, Texas, where he played in local bands, including with his brother Emilio and in the "River Walk Band" by Jim Cullum in " The Landing " ( Cullum 's Club ) in San Antonio. In 1971 he died of throat cancer.

Caceres was a sideman on the addition to the above also, inter alia, with Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Roy Eldridge, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Hot Lips Page and Muggsy Spanier. Caceres played many instruments, but is known from his swing time especially as a baritone saxophonist.

His grandson David and Anthony also work as a jazz musician in Houston.
