Ernst Barlach House

The Ernst -Barlach -Haus - Stiftung Hermann F. Reemtsma is in the west of the city of Hamburg, located in Jenischpark Art Museum.

When the museum

Origins of the collection

After his encounter with the versatile draftsman, printmaker, sculptor, and dramatic authors Hermann F. Reemtsma began in the mid-1930s to build a collection of works by Ernst Barlach. He knew how to preserve it against all odds, against the fascist cultural vandalism after in 1937 Barlach cenotaphs in Kiel ( Holy Ghost Church, destroyed in 1943 ) and Güstrow (Dom ) saws and melted down and 381 of his works including graphics were seized, the artist had been classified as degenerate and exhibition as well as work bans had been imposed on him. In the 1950s, Reemtsma founded the eponymous art foundation to preserve the plants to know and made ​​available to the public. Reemtsma began his collection with the walnut wood sculpture from 1925 The ascetic and gave Barlach commissioned to complete the frieze of the Listeners. In the year of death of Barlach, in 1938, Reemtsma had acquired 20 sculptures and 100 drawings.

Building

Shortly before his death, the industrialist Hermann F. Reemtsma (1882-1961) gave the order for the construction of the museum. He dedicated the Ernst- Barlach-Haus expressionist artist Ernst Barlach (1870-1938) and his works. The flat functionalist museum building was erected in 1961 by the Hamburg architect Werner Kallmorgen and completed in 1962 after the death of the founder. In October 1962, the Ernst Barlach Haus was opened. The bright exhibition rooms are grouped around a courtyard. First curator was Hugo Sieker. In the year 1995/1996 the building was extended to other rooms which accommodate temporary exhibitions.

Completion of the collection

The museum has more than 140 sculptural works, including 30 wooden sculptures and 400 drawings and an almost complete inventory of the printed sheets. Also worth mentioning is the attached library with literature on Ernst Barlach and his time.

Exhibitions

The objects of the temporary exhibitions are mostly presented in specially designated areas. But even in the spaces with sculptures by Barlach objects of temporary exhibitions are integrated.
