Ernst Bernheim

Ernst Bernheim ( born February 19, 1850 in Hamburg, † March 3, 1942 in Greifswald ) was a German historian. He taught from 1883 to 1921 as a professor at the University of Greifswald.

Life and achievements

After attending school and high school in Hamburg Bernheim studied at the Friedrich- Wilhelms- University of Berlin and the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg. In 1873 he earned his doctorate at the University of Strasbourg at Georg Waitz. In 1875 he habilitated at Julius Weizsäcker at the Georg-August -Universität Göttingen. In 1883 he was appointed professor of medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Greifswald, taught at the until his retirement in 1921. In 1899 he was rector of the University of Greifswald. Bernheim from 1886 on from Judaism to Protestantism.

Bernheim became famous for his textbook on historical method and the philosophy of history, which first appeared in 1889 and in which he deals with various methods of historical science. Bernheim was in extensive correspondence with Henri Pirenne and Karl Lamprecht. Among the historians of students around the turn of the century has long been a collection of documents to the German constitutional history, which was drafted in collaboration with Wilhelm Altmann, a very useful reference.
