Ernst Deger

Ernst Deger ( born April 15, 1809 in Bockenem at Hildesheim; † January 27, 1885 in Dusseldorf ) was a German painter. He is regarded by his held in the style of the Nazarene religious paintings as a major representative of the Düsseldorf School in the field of Christian art.

Life and work

Ernst Deger studied in 1828 at the Berlin Academy of Arts and moved in 1829 to the Dusseldorf Art Academy, where he studied with Wilhelm von Schadow. 1834-1835 he was a student of the local "Master Class ". On behalf of the Art Association of the Rhineland and Westphalia 1836-1837 he created a altarpiece for the church of St. Andrew ( Dusseldorf ), the Mary as "Queen of Heaven " show and soon became one of the most popular religious images of the Düsseldorf School.
