Ernst Ehrlich

Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich ( born March 27, 1921 in Berlin, † October 21, 2007 in Riehen near Basel ) was a German -Swiss Judaic scholar and historian. Honestly, who fled in 1943 to Switzerland from the Nazis, has been used for decades for the Christian-Jewish dialogue. From 1961 to 1994 he was European Director of the Jewish organization B'nai B'rith.

Life

Ehrlich was born the son of an official in Berlin. After graduation, he began in 1940 to study at the Berlin Academy of the Science of Judaism under Leo Baeck. When the facility was closed in 1942, Ehrlich was forced to forced labor. The lawyer Franz Kaufmann gave a fake Ehrlich of Cioma Schönhaus Pass, with which he could flee to Switzerland in June 1943. Ehrlich initially spent three months in a labor camp, but then received a scholarship to the University of Basel, where he began his studies again and 1950 Dr. phil. received his doctorate.

In 1955, Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich held teaching positions at the universities of Frankfurt, Zurich, Basel, Bern and at the Free University of Berlin. In 1961, Ehrlich European Directorate items of B'nai B'rith. He held this office until 1994 and then was elected an honorary vice-president of the organization. In 1972 Ehrlich was working as an adjunct professor for newer Jewish history at the theological faculty of the University of Bern.

Early on, Ehrlich had used for dialogue between Jews and Christians. In 1958 he became Secretary General of the Christian- Jewish Association in Switzerland. In the same year he was awarded the Leo Baeck Prize of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. During the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965, he worked as an advisor of Cardinal Augustin Bea and thereby involved in the drafting of the Declaration Nostra Aetate of the relationship of the Catholic Church to non-Christian religions. He was co-president of the Christian- Jewish Association at the Swiss Catholic Churches, 1990 Chairman of the Jewish- Roman Catholic Dialogue Commission of the Swiss Bishops' Conference in 1972. Also in the Swiss Protestant Church Federation and the "Jews and Christians " discussion group of the Central Committee of German Catholics Ehrlich participated.

Until his death in Ehrlich remained active, he published many papers and books on the Christian- Jewish relationship in the past and present. Recently he took in July 2007 in Berlin Israel Jacobson Award for his life's work against. Ehrlich died on October 21, 2007 in Riehen, near Basel, where he lived since 1943.

Since the winter semester 2008/ 09 exists at the Department of History and Cultural Studies at the Free University of Berlin, the " Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Masters Course. History, theory and practice of Jewish-Christian relations, "which makes an interdisciplinary master's degree program a contribution to Jewish-Christian dialogue.

Since 2009, the Begabtenförderungswerk Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich study work exists. As a twelfth gifted education institution of the Federal Republic of Germany awarded the Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich medal.
