Ernst Fuchs (artist)

Ernst Fuchs ( born February 13, 1930 in Vienna) is an Austrian painter, architect, graphic designer and musician. He is considered one of the founders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism.

Life

Ernst Fuchs was born the only child of Maximilian and Leopoldine Fuchs in Vienna, on the paternal side his ancestors were of Jewish origin. When his grandfather Siegmund in the U.S. and his father after the "Anschluss " of Austria 1938/39, had to emigrate to Shanghai, he was baptized a Roman Catholic after anti- Semitic hostility 1942. From about 1942 Fuchs received first instruction in drawing and painting by the painter and restorer Alois Schiemann, the brother of his godmother. By the age of fifteen he received instruction in sculpture and painting with Emmy Steinbock and Fritz Fröhlich at the painting school of St. Anna in Vienna.

From 1946 to 1950 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, first under Robin Andersen, then Albert Gütersloh. His first solo exhibition was in Paris in 1949, where he moved in 1950. This was followed up to 1956 trips to America, Italy, Spain and England. In 1957 he wrote a considerable time in the Dormition Abbey on Mount Zion (Israel ) and focused on icon painting. In 1962 he returned to Vienna, where he became a professor. He is, together with Wolfgang Hutter, Arik Brauer, Rudolf Hausner and Anton Lehmden the founders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. In 1972 he acquired the Otto Wagner Villa and began with the Nymphaeum Omega fountain with the realization of his architectural ideas. The renovated building now serves as a "private Ernst Fuchs Museum " and the venue. The villa which once served him as a studio, Fox no longer inhabited today. The artist lives and works since 1988 in Monaco.

His initial surrealist, later Mannerist works frequently have a religious or mythological symbolism.
