Ernst Hildebrand

Ernst Wilhelm Hildebrand ( born March 8, 1833 in Falkenberg / Elster, † November 17, 1924 in Berlin) was a German painter.

Life

Ernst Hildebrand was a son of Falkenberger manor owner and later Sorauer station master Karl Hildebrand and his wife Emma, née Lemm. He was a student of Carl Steffeck in Berlin, where he was apart from spending a year in Paris, and subsequently operate. In 1875 he was appointed professor at the School of Art in Karlsruhe. From there he moved in 1880 to the Academy of Arts in Berlin. However, his teaching, he gave up in 1885.

Initially, Hildebrand devoted exclusively of decorative painting, but then turned to genre painting, which mainly dealt with the figures of Luther and Queen Louise. In the nineties, he put the emphasis on the portrait painting. His pictures are distinguished in these years according to contemporary tastes by showy color, but sometimes slide into a routine salon art from.

Hildebrand also worked for the court circles and painted among which the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess of Baden and the German Crown Prince and his family. Ernst Hildebrand's brother, Max (1839-1910) was a precision mechanic and manufacturer of optical devices.
