Ernst Hilmar

Ernst Hilmar ( born September 20, 1938 in Graz) is an Austrian musicologist and librarian. It deals in particular with the work of Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss ( son ), Hugo Wolf and the Second Viennese School.

Career

After studying musicology at the University of Graz and the University of Music Vienna ( Promotion: Graz 1962) Hilmar first went to Freiburg im Breisgau and was a research associate of the RISM office in Kassel after. He then moved into the music collection of the Vienna City and State Library, which was led at that time by Fritz Racek ( 1911-1975 ). In 1975, he became its successor. 1987 Hilmar was habilitated at the University of Vienna (Collected Studies on the life and work of Franz Schubert).

In 1979 he founded the Society for the Promotion of Schubert research, emerged from the 1987 Vienna International Franz Schubert Institute ( IFSI ), where he edited the periodical Schubert 1988-2003 through the lens. He also initiated the founding of the Vienna Institute for Strauss Research ( WISF ). There was a long standing collaboration with the music antiquarian and publisher Hans Schneider, who was editor of the publications of the Institute founded by Hilmar and promoted. 2001 Hilmar was voted as Secretary General of the IFSI because of numerous violations of the statutes of the association, the IFSI had to be dissolved in April 2005.

His Schubert monograph was translated into Japanese ( Tokyo 2000) and Chinese ( Beijing 2005).

1994 had Hilmar on suspicion of malversation the Vienna Library leave and has since been retired. He continued (including in many cases together with Margret Jestremski ) scientifically active. Currently, the role as head of Hilmar's music collection of the Vienna Library (1975-1994) is the subject of prosecutorial investigations.
