Ernst Ihbe

Ernst Ihbe (born 20 December 1913 in Erlbach, Vogtland; † August 30, 1992 in Leipzig ) was a German racing cyclist. In 1936 he became Olympic champion with the tandem.

Ernst Ihbe was a qualified chemist. He started for the R. C. Wettin in Leipzig. From 1934 he formed together with Carl Lorenz a tandem. In the Open British Championships in 1934 went in the first round Lorenz on the forward position, but the two documents. In the repechage Ihbe moved forward, and as the two not only won the repechage, but also the British Championship, Ihbe remained until the end of the common career of the man in front. The two athletes jointly won two German league titles, Ihbe was also once German master more than 25 kilometers. At the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 Ihbe and Lorenz jointly won the gold medal.

After his return from captivity to Ihbe tried 1945 with no greater success as a professional. He later was cycling coach at various clubs in Leipzig and from 1965 District Coach in Halle. In this capacity, he worked on several years later Olympic champion Klaus -Jürgen Grünke until it moved to Berlin at age 19.
