Ernst Kreidolf

Ernst Kreidolf ( born February 9, 1863 in Bern, † August 12, 1956 ibid; actually Konrad Ernst Theophil Kreidolf ) was a Swiss graphic designer and illustrator of children's books.

Life and work

Ernst Kreidolf was born in 1863 as the son of a merchant. He first attended elementary school in Taegerwilen and then the secondary school in Emmishofen (now Kreuzlingen ). From 1879 to 1883 he served an apprenticeship as a lithographer in Konstanz. Beginning in 1883, he attended the School of Applied Arts in Munich and in 1889 the local Academy of Fine Arts. His livelihood, he played at that time with drawing portraits of criminals for the Munich- Search paper.

In 1897 Kreidolf in Arnold 's Art Salon in Dresden his watercolors to flowers and fairy tale "Sleeping Trees ", which caught the attention of several children's book publishers, of which, however, no one could decide on a publication. Only through a loan from the Prince of Schaumburg -Lippe Kreidolf was the picture book "Flower fairy tale" in Kommissionsverlag Piloty & Löhle issue in Munich. The lithographs for the pressure created Kreidolf itself

Since 1898, he illustrated mostly children's books, which he also wrote for the part itself. Flowers and animals play an important role in these books. So there are about personalized butterflies and insects that Kreidolf wove together in dreamlike metamorphoses. His books were published before the First World War, especially in the publishing house of Hermann Friedrich & Schaff stone ( until 1905 Schafstein ) and after returning to Switzerland at the red apple -Verlag.

In 1918 he moved permanently over to Bern, after he had worked since 1916 been a long time in Switzerland. 1956 died Kreidolf in his birth city of Bern. He is buried in the Bernese Schosshaldenfriedhof, his estate is located in the Burgerbibliothek Bern.
