Ernst Münch (musician)

Ernst Münch ( French: Ernest Munch, * 1859, † 1928) was an organist and choir director from Alsace.

Biography

Ernst Münch was brother of Eugen Münch and father of Emmi, Fritz and Charles Münch. He was organist at the Wilhelmerkirche in Strasbourg and founder of Wilhelmer choir, especially the works of Johann Sebastian Bach devoted himself.

Albert Schweitzer, who had learned in Mulhouse ( Mulhouse ) with Eugen Münch piano and organ, took over in 1894 the organ accompaniment for his performances of Bach's cantatas and Passions. Münch led the Wilhelmer - choir performances of the Bach Passions on Good Friday, so that the church music experienced a strong impulse. Contrary to the fashion at that time, Bach's works perform modernized, he tried to correct historical performance practice.

At the Strasbourg Conservatory Ernst Münch taught organ playing. When he studied, among them Heinrich Boell, Adolf Hamm and Joseph Müller- Blattau.

Munch's daughter Emma married Paul Schweitzer, Albert Schweitzer's brother. His son Fritz Münch succeeded him as conductor of the Bach concertos with the Wilhelmer choir and became director of the Strasbourg Conservatory.
