Ernst Pauer

Ernst Pauer ( born December 21, 1826 in Vienna, † May 5, 1905 in Jugenheim ) was an Austrian pianist, composer, music teacher and music theoretician.

Life

Pauer's musical roots lead to family Strings, his mother 's maiden name was Strings, he was a grandson of Andreas Streicher. His father was the Lutheran Superintendent of Vienna of the same name, Ernst Pauer. From 1839 to 1844, he studied composition in Vienna with Simon Sechter and piano with Mozart's son Franz Xaver Wolfgang. Further studies were carried out from 1845 with Franz Lachner in Munich.

In 1847 he competed on the recommendation Lachner as the successor of Heinrich Esser as conductor of the choral society in Mainz and was selected. In Mainz he wrote on behalf of Schott & Söhne two operas, Don Riego (1849 ) and the red mask ( 1850). Both operas were performed in Mainz and Mannheim. Pauer also composed choral music, overtures and interludes for Mainz stage.

In April 1851, he resigned from his office in Mainz, and settled in London. From the beginning, Pauer's piano playing in London was admired to the utmost. He was there a series of concerts in which he depicted the development of the piano from 1600 to the modern day. From 1859 to 1864 he taught at the Royal Academy of Music. He was particularly striving to historical performance practice.

In 1876 he was appointed Director of the piano class in the newly opened National Training School for Music. Pauer also taught at the University of Cambridge.

Pauer's interest in earlier piano music is also reflected in its many editions earlier piano music. He also wrote numerous transcriptions, often provided with fingering, but the most published in England. He also gave out some piano schools. In 1896 he retired to retire after Jugenheim at Darmstadt back

His son, Max von Pauer (1866-1945) was also a world-famous pianist.
