Ernst Ranke

Ernst Constantin Ranke ( born September 10, 1814 Wiehe (Unstrut ); † 30 July 1888 in Bert Rich) was a German Protestant theologian.

Family

Ernst Ranke was born as the youngest son of the lawyer Gottlieb Israel Ranke (1762-1836) and his wife Friederike, born Lehmicke ( 1776-1836 ). He was the brother of the historian Leopold von Ranke (1795-1886), the theologian Friedrich Heinrich Ranke (1798-1876) and the philologist Karl Ferdinand Ranke ( 1802-1876 ). His nephews were the physiologist and anthropologist Johannes Ranke and in 1891 knighted physician Heinrich von Ranke

Ranke married in 1842 Theoda Wet ( 1812-1860 ), daughter of Professor Christian Friedrich Nasse ( 1778-1851 ). The couple Ranke had four children: Henrietta ( Etta ) ( 1843-1939 ), who married the physician Eduard Hitzig and published the biography of her father, Selma ( 1844-1943 ), who married the chemist Georg Ludwig Carius, Linda ( 1848-1891 ) and Werner ( 1852-1852 ).

Life

Ernst Ranke worked as a professor of Church History and New Testament exegesis at the University of Marburg since 1850. At the same time he was the consistory. 1865/66 he served as rector of the university.
