Ernst von Schuch

Ernst Edler von Schuch, born Ernest Gottfried Schuch, ( born November 23, 1846 in Graz, † May 10 1914 in Niederlößnitz ) was an Austrian conductor, who became famous as General Music Director of the Dresden Court Opera, and his collaboration with Richard Strauss.

Life and work

Schuch studied in Graz and later in Vienna with Felix Otto Dessoff and began in 1867 as Kapellmeister to Theodor Lobe in Wroclaw. This was followed by commitments in Würzburg (1868-1870), Graz (1870/1871) and Basel, before he was hired in 1872 by Bernhard Pollini to Dresden. He was born in 1872 music director of the Court Opera, from 1873 Royal Kapellmeister in addition to Julius Rietz, later besides Franz Wüllner. In 1882 he became director of the Court Opera as Councilor, 1889, he was musical director. 1898 Schuch was raised by the Austrian Emperor in the hereditary peerage, and in 1899 he was appointed Privy Councillor Saxon. In 1909 he was awarded the Saxon nobility recognition. His work went down in history as the era opera Schuch.

In addition to guest performances in Berlin, Munich, Vienna and Paris, he remained until 1914 Dresden connected and turned the house into one of the leading music stages in Europe, formed an outstanding ensemble and expanded the orchestra into one of the largest in the world. In addition to the repertoire of Richard Wagner, he directed the world premieres of Richard Strauss' Feuersnot (1901 ), Salome (1905 ), Elektra (1909 ), Der Rosenkavalier (1911 ) and German premieres of Puccini and Mascagni. In addition, he was also esteemed as a concert conductor and sat as such, especially for orchestral works of Strauss and Draeseke one.

Schuch was married to the coloratura soprano Clementine von Schuch - Proska ( 1850-1932 ). He took up his residence in 1882 in Niederlößnitz in Weintraubenstraße (1883, at his request renamed Schuch road 15/17), where the architect Moritz Ziller had built in 1866 a country house in the Swiss style. There came 1891, the daughter Liesel to the world that a successful coloratura soprano was also. Schuch drove many years by train from the nearby station grape to work. Extra for him a special train was set up, popularly called " Schuch - train ", who drove for each sample time.

In 1878 him the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Albrecht was awarded.

Schuch is together with his wife in the cemetery Radebeul West buried near his daughter Liesel.

His daughter Liesel von Schuch (1891-1990), the youngest of five children, and their older sister Kate (1885-1973; . Verh also Ullmann and Schmidt) also beat the singers career. The son of Hans von Schuch (1886-1963) was a famous cellist. His daughter, Clementine von Schuch ( b. 1921 ) was also an opera singer.
