Erskine Hamilton Childers

Erskine Hamilton Childers ( born December 11, 1905 in London, † November 17, 1974 in Dublin ), son of the executed in the Irish Civil War writer Robert Erskine Childers, the fourth President of Ireland was ( Irish: na hÉireann Uachtarán ) from 1973 until his death in 1974.

Raised in the UK Childers worked after completing his studies at the University of Cambridge for a tourism office in Paris in order to then be working in Dublin as a member of the press. In 1938 he received Irish citizenship and became a member of parliament of Fianna Fáil. 1952 married Anglican Childers his wife Rita.

Childers later headed various ministries: Minister for Posts & Telegraphs 1951-1954, 1959-1961 and 1966-1969, Minister for Lands 1957-1959, Minister for Transport and Power 1959-1969 and Minister for Health 1969-1973. In 1969 he was appointed Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister ) appointed. In 1973, he won the election for President of Ireland against its competitors Tom O'Higgins, the candidate of Fine Gael. Childers died of a heart attack in office.

Originally, all parties agreed secretly, as his successor to nominate his widow Rita Childers; but before this even before it was notified to it and proclaims, led to the collapse of a misunderstanding of the agreement. The semi- deaf Fine Gael Minister Tom O'Donnell understood the question from a journalist for alleged nomination of Mrs. Childers wrong. He thought that the journalist already knew about the nomination decision and confirmed that Rita Childers was to be the new President of Ireland. The opposition, in the opinion that the whole mess was staged by the government and this would suggest it political advantage, then withdrew from the agreement.
