ERTMS Regional

ERTMS Regional is a cost-optimized version of the European Rail Traffic Management System, for the control and protection of the branch line.

The essential features

  • ERTMS Regional mainly includes the route technique. For the on-board device to monitor the completeness of the train is required. All vehicles with security technology ETCS Level 3 can still come to ERTMS Regional routes are used.

The special feature of the ERTMS REGIONAL technology is the lack of train detection systems compared to conventional systems, which also makes up a large part of the cost reduction. The track occupation is carried out by cyclic position reports to the locomotives to the train control center via GSM -R radio. This position is determined, as with any vehicle equipped with ETCS on the basis of eurobalises ( reference points). The position is determined by means of odometry between the beacons. The additionally required to track vacancy detection train length and the result of Zugvollständigkeitprüfung is entered manually by the driver.

  • In ERTMS Regional can in principle circulate only drive vehicles that are equipped with at least ETCS Level 2. Rides with non ETCS - equipped locomotives are possible under a special operating procedure. In return, these locomotives are equipped with special mobile phones with which blocked the route for this train ride in cooperation between dispatchers and drivers and is then resolved manually. To simplify the system, the parallel installation of other train protection systems in the specification is prohibited.
  • All elements of the line technology such as switches, edge guards, level crossings or movable bridges are controlled by so-called Object Controller OC directly from TCC and also monitored.
  • To be ranked, a predefined partition is set as the maneuvering taking place in the then only shunting. The limits of shunting are monitored by the TCC. After completion of the shunting tracks are by the Dispatcher after notification by the shunting as " busy" or enter "free" in the TCC and lifted the maneuvering area again.

Development

The concept was conceived in the late 90 under the name ETCS LC ( Low Cost ). In recent years, the development was largely driven by Banverket, the operator of the Swedish railway network, in cooperation with the UIC. Meanwhile the system is the extent specified that Banverket the equipment for the first pilot line Västerdalsbanan ( Borlänge Malung ) has commissioned Bombardier Transportation in order. The technology was installed in 2009. In the following two years the system was tested. Commercial operation was eventually incorporated as a test on February 21, 2012. Two months later, the plant went into regular operation.

Denmark chose the complete transition to ECTS due to increasing problems with obsolete signaling systems in November 2013. It also has side lines with ETCS Regional ( another name ETCS 3) are to be equipped, which is scheduled from 2021. Previously, the main routes to be replaced.
