ErtuÄŸrul Apakan

Ertuğrul Apakan (* 1947 in Izmir - Bornova ) is a Turkish diplomat and Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations.

Biography

After joining the diplomatic service in 1971 Apakan rose in 1996 as ambassador to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Then in 2000 he was Director General of Cypriot and Greek Affairs in the Foreign Ministry as a proven expert in years. In this role, 2004, his appointment as Deputy Under Secretary.

Subsequently, he was appointed in December 2006 by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer to Under Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs In this capacity, he signed on 6 December 2007 with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Turkey Eckart Cuntz, an agreement on the establishment of a German -Turkish University in Istanbul. In addition, he took the Under Secretary with Foreign Minister Ali Babacan in early June 2009 at a meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian held in Istanbul, which was brokered by Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy -Rey about and the settlement of disputes and the normalization of relations between the two should serve countries.

A few weeks later, he was confirmed by the Turkish Council of Ministers on 29 June 2009 as the successor of Baki İlkin Permanent Representative of Turkey to the United Nations. Apakans successor as undersecretary was Ambassador Feridun Sinirlioğlu, the former Deputy Undersecretary of affairs of the Middle East, who played also a key role in talks between Israel and Syria. On 28 August 2009, he was then received by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki -moon for the first time as part of the presentation of credentials.
