ErtuÄŸrul Osman

Ertuğrul Osman ( born August 18, 1912 in Istanbul, † September 23, 2009 ibid ) was head of the House Osman, which ruled the Ottoman Empire. As a result of the abolition of the Sultanate in 1922 and the Caliphate in 1924, the family was forced to leave the newly founded Republic.

Life

Ertuğrul Osman, was born in Yıldız Palace in Istanbul, the youngest son of Prince Muhammad Burhaneddin Efendi from his marriage to his second wife Aliye Hanim Efendi Nazlıyar Melik, a daughter of Huseyin Bey. He is the grandson of Sultan Abdülhamids II, he received his education at the Theresa Academy in Vienna and at the Institut d' études politiques de Paris. In 1924 he received during his studies in Vienna the news that all members of the Sultan's family would have to go into exile. Since 1933 he lived in the United States, most recently in Manhattan. In 1991 he married Zeynep Tarzi, daughter Abdulfettah Tarzis, a nephew of former Afghan King Amanullah Khan, and Pakize Tarzis, a gynecologist from a Turkish Ottoman family. In 1992 he visited Turkey for the first time. On March 12, 1994, he was head of the House dreiundvierzigstes Osman with the death of his predecessor Mehmet Orhan Efendi. In 2004 he received Turkish citizenship and took " Osman " as a last name.

Ertuğrul Osman died on 23 September 2009 in Istanbul of kidney failure. The funeral prayer was performed with high participation in the Sultan Ahmed Mosque.
