Ervin Acél (conductor)

Ervin Acél ( born June 3, 1935 in Timişoara, Romania, † 24 August, 2006 Vienna, Austria ) was a Hungarian conductor.

Biography

Training

Ervin Acél studied at the musical lyceum in his hometown of Timisoara and continued his studies at the Conservatory in Bucharest from 1953 to 1957 continued. His teachers were Victor Iusceanu (theory and solfeggio ), Paul Constantinescu (harmony ), Silvia Capatana (piano), Adriana Sachelarie and George Breazul (music history), Constantin Silvestri ( orchestral conducting ) and Ion Vicol ( choral conducting ), From 1958 to 1960 he studied in Cluj at Antonin Ciolan and Anton Ronai orchestral conducting.

Debut and conductor in Oradea

His debut Acél on October 4, 1960 in Botosani, where he was engaged as a fixed conductor for a short time ( 1960-1963 ) and there was also active as a piano professor.

In 1965 he took over the management of the Philharmonic in Oradea, where he would remain until 1992. Under his leadership, this ensemble has become one of the leading orchestras in Romania. Acél participated in numerous master classes given in Hilversum with Jean Fournet. He specialized in Viennese Classicism and Baroque, and devoted himself especially to the two great composers of Oradea: Michael Haydn and Carl Ditter von Dittersdorf. So he took many works of Michael Haydn on record which were completely unknown to date.

Since 1989, he founded the summer master classes in orchestral conducting took place in Baile Felix in Oradea - up to that time a unique thing in Romania. Among his pupils Riderelli Andrea (Italy ), Paul Murphy (England), Guillaume Boulay and Frederik Rabemanjara (France), Dan Ratiu, Cristian Neagu (Romania ) and many others

During his time in Oradea Acél was for a short period, between 1981 and 1983, the artistic director of the State Opera in Istanbul.

Years in Szeged and Vienna

From 1980 to 1989 he was next to his artistic activity also director of the Philharmonic Oradea. On November 23, 1985, he initiated as part of a cultural exchange program, a concert at the Brahms Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna.

From 1991 to 1999 Acél was artistic director and director of the Philharmonic Szeged. In this role, he led numerous concerts, toured, including a great tour of Portugal in 1997, in which Agnes Baltsa also participated, and many recordings.

Since 1996 Acél taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he was to remain until his death. However, it did not mean that he gave up his activities as a famous conductor in Hungary and Romania. Since 1999, he returned to Oradea, where he gave regular concerts and thus was constantly traveling between Vienna, Szeged and Oradea.

In addition to his famous and very popular among students master classes in Romania Acél gave his experience and knowledge to the students in Vienna under the Vienna Music Seminar and among other things, in Italy on. His extensive language skills facilitate your work with students of many cultures.

Since 1996 until his death in 2006 was Elena Casella from Milan his only assistant.

After a long illness Acél died in late August 2006 in Vienna. He was buried in his hometown Köszegszerdahely, near Kőszeg in the presence of many musicians, students and friends.

He left behind no less than 40 recordings, but these are so far only 8 released on CD.
