Erwin Stein

Erwin Stein ( born November 7, 1885 in Vienna, † 17 July 1958 in London) was an Austrian composer, conductor and music theorist.

Life

Erwin Stein was born as the youngest child of originating from Bohemia and working in Vienna publisher and bookseller Markus Stein ( Manz Verlag) in an art-loving upper middle class family of Jewish origin. On January 19, 1886, he converted together with his mother and sister Helene to the Protestant faith HB

The mediocre students enrolled for the winter semester 1905/1906 at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Vienna, but also attended lectures in philosophy at Jerusalem Wilhelm and Friedrich Jodl.

1906-1910 took stone lessons with Arnold Schoenberg. " The encounter with Schoenberg stone fate determined (...). " Stone was a tireless champion of the music of his teacher and of the Schoenberg circle. In his years in Vienna stone was leading employees of the Universal Edition, where he also owned shares.

After the "Anschluss " of Austria with Germany in 1938 Erwin Stein had to sell Edition and emigrate to London as a Jew his shares in Universal. There he became a contributor to the music publisher Boosey & Hawkes, and promoted and promoted - as before in Vienna, Arnold Schoenberg - the work of Benjamin Britten.

On July 17, 1958 Stone suffered a fatal heart attack. His ashes were scattered after cremation into all the winds. He left twelve songs, four piano works and a Scherzo for String Quartet, arrangements of works by Gustav Mahler, Alban Berg, Anton Bruckner, five books and more than 170 music-theoretical essays.

The marriage with Sofie Bachmann sprang the pianist Marion Thorpe. Erwin's siblings were the publisher Richard Stein (1871-1932) ( Manz Verlag), the theosophist Paula Kemper Ling ( 1878-1952 ), which is active in Manz Emma by Sax ( 1882-1969 ) and the painter Helene Winger ( 1884-1945 ).
