Erwin Stresemann

Erwin Stresemann ( born November 22, 1889 in Dresden, † November 20, 1972 in Berlin) was a German zoologist and professor.

Life

Erwin Stresemann was the son of a pharmacist Richard Stresemann and his wife Marie, nee Dark Beck. He studied from 1908 natural sciences (especially zoology) at the universities of Jena, Freiburg and Munich and was from 1910 to 1912 participants at the 2nd Freiburg Moluccas expedition, which took place under the direction of Karl Deninger. From 1914 to 1918 he did military service and worked at the research assistant department at the Zoological State Collection Munich from 1918. In 1920 he became a Ph.D. in Richard von Hertwig at the University of Munich. doctorate.

In 1921 he became an assistant at the Zoological Museum in Berlin and head of the ornithological department, where he was employed from 1924 as curator. In 1930, he was appointed in 1946 in Berlin as Adjunct Professor, Professor with tenure of Zoology. From 1946 to 1959, he was appointed acting director at the Humboldt University Berlin Zoological Museum.

Stresemann was the General Secretary, President ( since 1949) and Honorary President of the German Ornithologists' Society and one of the leading ornithologists of the 20th century. From 1922 to 1961 ( from 1956 together with Prof. Dr. Günther Niethammer, a student Stresemann ) he was editor of the Journal of Ornithology. The Ornithological monthly reports issued Stresemann in 1922 (acquired by Prof. Dr. Anton Reichenow ) to the setting of 1944. In the 20s and 30s he was the impetus for a transformation of the earlier, mainly faunistic and systematic ornithology to a branch of modern biology and justified through connections with genetics, functional anatomy, physiology and ethology of birds a "New Biological Ornithology ". He was a member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin and the Leopoldina.

One of his most famous pupil was Ernst Mayr. Stresemann was the founder and editor of the " excursion fauna of Germany ", a popular destination directory of the local wildlife, which is still published and is simply referred to by students of zoology as " The Stresemann ".

In the GDR, he was in 1960 awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

Erwin Stresemann was from 1916-1939 married to Elizabeth Deninger, sister of Charles Deninger (see above) and daughter of the Mainz chemist Albert Deninger, the co-owner of Mainz leather factory Mayer- Michel Deninger was, but by 1900 more through its calcium fluoride tests for caries prophylaxis was known. The marriage was divorced in 1939 and married in 1941 Stresemann Vesta Grote.
