Erwin Waldner

Erwin Waldner ( born January 24, 1933 Nürtingen -Neckarhausen ) is a former German football player.

Career

Association

Georg Wurzer, the then coach of VfB Stuttgart, took Waldner at age 18 from TB Neckarhausen for VfB. In his first season, 1952/53, graduated Waldner as a striker all the games in the then champion team and until 1960, more than 300 missions in the jersey of VfB. There he achieved in 1953 the runner-up and won in 1954 and 1958, twice the DFB Cup. He was both playmaker and scorer. Herbert Henzler referred to him in a lecture as a legend and " Superstar" at VfB. Quote from an international match report: " ... what can the ball is not to describe ." In addition to his art, he was outstanding with tremendous quickness and shooting power.

As one of the first German football player was Erwin Waldner professional abroad. From 1960 to 1961 he was with FC Zurich in Switzerland ( with the later national team coach Kobi Kuhn ) and active from 1961 to 1963 for the team of SPAL in Italy. There he came in Serie A on 18 missions and two goals. Waldner 1963 returned back to the founding of the Bundesliga for VfB Stuttgart, where he was active until 1967 and maintained 63 top-flight appearances and twelve gates. His former coach Rudi Good village referred to him in a television interview as a "world class player ". As an amateur he later ran for the FV Ebingen ( Coach: Bernd Hoss ) on.

National

In the German national Erwin Waldner played 13 times, scoring two goals. He was almost 13 years younger than Fritz Walter and suitable for the position of playmaker. In the match against Russia in Dusseldorf 1956 ( 1:2 ), he was according to eyewitnesses and Match Report " best man on the pitch ." Sepp Herberger but not stuck to him, even though he " was in its time the best player at his position ( Right Wing ) in Germany " according to opinion of football experts (DFB Journal as the game between Germany and Ireland in Stuttgart 2006). After Helmut Schön 1964 national coach had become, he was awarded for their outstanding performances in the Bundesliga again offered the chance to play in the national team. Others

Since finishing his career Waldner operates the restaurant Burrenhof on the Swabian Alb near the ruins Hohenneuffen near his hometown Nürtingen. Since about 1998 he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's. On the occasion of his 75th birthday, a charity match was held in his home town on 13 July 2008, in which the sports complex was renamed Erwin -Waldner Stadium.

His son Erwin Waldner junior was German A- Youth Champion and played in the 2nd Bundesliga.
