Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 29 to 38 millimeters. The top is dyed black to dark brown. On the fore wings there is a gray -pollinated Postdiskalbinde. Transparent stains are missing. The hind wings are marked dark brown and with some whitish points. Their underside is provided uniformly brown and with a series of white dots near the outer edge.

Caterpillar

Full-grown caterpillars have a green color, a narrow dark back-line, off-white side stripes and a red-brown head.

Doll

The pupa is reddish brown to yellow- brown in color. The abdomen is yellowish, the elytra greenish.

Similar Species

  • Erynnis Brizo shows an overall darker appearance and is larger ( wingspan 32-45 mm).
  • Erynnis marloyi and Plebejus - Dickkopffalter ( Erynnis day ) occur only in Europe and Asia, and thus have no geographical overlap with Erynnis icelus foer.

Distribution and occurrence

The range of the species extends from the Northwest Territories eastward through southern Canada up to Nova Scotia. Further south, it has also been demonstrated to Arizona, New Mexico, Arkansas, Alabama and Georgia. Erynnis icelus foer preferred inhabited open woodlands, moist stream valleys.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation a year, mostly in May and June. They suck the nectar of flowers and recording fluid intake and minerals from damp Erdstellen on. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various willow ( Salix), poplar (Populus ) and birch species ( Betula ). They live in nests of rolled and spun leaves. The fully grown caterpillars hibernate.
