Erythemis simplicicollis (females )

Erythemis is a genus of the subfamily Sympetrinae and was established in 1861 by Hermann August Hagen. The distribution area extends primarily through South and Central America, but extends sometimes also in the southern states of the USA.

Features

Erythemis species are 35-62 millimeters in size and are mainly red, blue and brown in color and black. The compound eyes of the representatives of Erythemis touch but do not merge as in some other species of dragonfly. The broad flattened abdomen is slightly shorter than the wings and is slightly narrower apically. The abdomen attachments are short and like the genitals also designed to be very weak. Another prominent feature over other species are three to four bristles have Erythemis species on their femur.

Habitat

The Erythemis representatives are particularly active in the warm sunlight. They prefer ponds, pond, marsh and swamp land as well as slow-flowing streams.
